Manufacturing the Future
The art and science of manufacturing is inextricably connected to the discover and development of new materials, as well as, the constant modernization of existing materials that possess the familiar and reliable physical and chemical properties for which they are selected. An emerging recognition is that a “new” material is no longer simply a singular substance used for a singular function such as with structural applications of concrete or light-transmission applications of window glass. Exciting new technological opportunities emerge through the complex combination of multiple materials, each of which have very different properties but together exhibit exquisit sophistication and functionality. Modern, mobile cell phones are a beautiful example of the opportunities to be found.
Manufacturing and materials innovation at Arizona State University goes hand-in-hand where attention focuses on synergistic selection of material combinations and their highly controlled synthesis and fabrication into complex three, two and, even, one dimensional shapes. ASU has multiple centers of materials excellence that are devoted to specific missions of energy, resource sustainability, semiconductor technology, space exploration, health and water purification

ASU researcher makes quantum leaps in materials engineering
Sefaattin Tongay, an assistant professor of materials science and engineering at Arizona State University, calls silicon a “great” material but says it has limited ability to produce significant improvements in devices beyond transistors and solar cells. He says cadmium mercury telluride is another good material to work with — but really just for developing better infrared detectors.
ASU driving advances in metal additive manufacturing
America Makes, the national accelerator for additive manufacturing, recently chose Arizona State University to lead a $1 million directed project opportunity to advance additive manufacturing postprocessing techniques. The Air Force Research Laboratory will fund the project with supplemental matching funds from the university and its three research collaborators.
Professor's new approach to manufacturing silicon could boost Arizona economy
Assistant professor Bruno Azeredo's nanomanufacturing research focuses on the fabrication of silicon because of its potential use in 3-D microscale optical elements, such as the optical gratings used in microscopes and spectrophotometers that he is displaying above.
“Arizona is a key player in the manufacturing scene,” says Bruno Azeredo, a recently hired assistant professor in manufacturing engineering at Arizona State University.
